The filter in ZEISS polarizing sunglass lenses are made by stretching a thin sheet of iodine-doped polyvinyl alcohol. This process lines up chains of molecules specifically to keep some of the light from passing through the lens. Horizontal light waves that cause glare are blocked, while vertical light waves get through.
