How does blue light affect sleep?

Blue light has a big influence on our sleep-wake cycle. This is because the visible light spectrum also contains blue light waves – and these help us stay awake and alert during the day.

As the sun sets, the lack of light signals the body to produce melatonin. This hormone is responsible for us getting tired and falling asleep. Blue light from smartphones or laptops for example, can interfere with the release of melatonin. As a result, this can often lead to problems falling asleep and sleeping through the night. You can now prescribe high-quality blue light glasses for your customers to block that part of the blue light spectrum.

Do you need special
computer lenses?

People are often unaware of how frequently they look at screens during the day. In reality, they are constantly surrounded by light sources such as digital devices and LED lights that emit a disproportionate amount of blue light. Blue light tends to scatter throughout the vitreous humor when entering the eye, causing so-called “visual noise”.

People may perceive this as uncomfortable glare and a reduction in contrast perception. Additionally, blue light causes longitudinal aberrations that may lead to blurred images. This unfocused “visual noise” can contribute to visual discomfort and symptoms associated with digital eye strain.

Common symptoms of digital eye strain (DES) are:

  • headaches

  • blurred vision

  • dry or burning eyes

Fortunately, these symptoms can be alleviated with little effort. Those affected can try to reduce their screen time, and they can also wear glasses with blue light blocking lenses.

UV Protect Technology

Prolonged UV exposure poses serious health risks

UV radiation is present all day, every day. Whether in winter or summer, on sunny or cloudy days, we are all constantly exposed to UV radiation. Most of us know that UV rays can damage the skin, but long-term UV exposure can also be harmful to the eyes and the skin surrounding them.

A UV camera reveals what is invisible to the naked eye. UV radiation has a significant impact on the skin. And also on our eyes.

Back surface UV protection –
True UV protection from all sides

To prevent reflections from the back surface of the lens into the eye, ZEISS incorporates back surface UV protection standard with all ZEISS DuraVision coatings. This combination with ZEISS UVProtect gives the patients complete, sunglass-level UV protection.
